Press Release: PulpEye has delivered DDA No. 100

Solenis LLC recently purchased Dynamic Drainage Analyzer (DDA) No. 100 from PulpEye.  The DDA is a dynamic drainage tester which gives drainage values comparable to drainage in a wire section. The tester is used by paper and board producers as well as chemical and filler suppliers around the world.

With the aid of the DDA, drainage conditions for different pulp mixtures, refining levels, chemicals and filler additives, etc. can be studied. Optimal drainage and retention are important parameters for paper production. Both productivity and quality are improved with correct amounts of chemicals at the right place in stock preparation. Studies of drainage for different stock mixtures with different additives and their respective effects can quickly be carried out without disturbing production.

“We have customers all over the world using our DDA in production as well as in development projects,” says Öjvind Sundvall, Managing Director, PulpEye. “We are pleased to have delivered more than 100 DDA testers with more orders pending. Last year we launched the DDA 5, the latest version of our dynamic drainage analyzer with much success due to its number of new, even more efficient, drainage tests.”

“Solenis uses the tester for wet end chemistry studies at their customers in order to optimize retention, a characteristic which affects product quality as well as economy for paper and board producers,” stated John Bujold, Platform Launch Manager, NA Pulp and Paper, Solenis LLC.

DDA 5 has a compact design and is equipped with a variety of new features including retention via a turbidity sensor; drainage rate can be determined for selected time spans and chemical dosage is automated. Equipment cleaning is carried out automatically after each analysis allowing more analyses to be performed per hour compared to previous versions. All input and presentation of the results are done through a new, user-friendly interface.

Solenis i USA blev genom köpet av ytterligare en DDA 5, användaren av den hundrade DDA-mätaren från PulpEye. DDA, eller Dynamic Drainage Analyzer, är en dynamisk avvattningsmätare som ger avvattningsvärden jämförbara med verklig avvattning på ett viraparti. Mätaren används av pappers- och kartongtillverkare, liksom leverantörer av kemikalier och fyllnadsmedel, över hela världen.

Med hjälp av den kan avvattningsförhållanden studeras för olika massablandningar, malningsnivåer, tillsatser av kemikalier och fyllmedel med mera. Optimal avvattning och retention är viktiga parametrar vid papperstillverkning. Rätt kemikaliedosering på rätt punkt i mälderiet höjer både produktivitet och kvalitet. Genom avvattningsmätningar av verkliga mäldblandningar kan tillsatser göras och deras effekter snabbt studeras utan att störa produktionen.

New module from PulpEye for faster calibration of online consistency sensors

Based on a customer request, PulpEye launches a new module, ConsistencyEye, for faster measurements and calibration of sensors for different process streams. This method is particularly suitable for measurements of low consistency streams, e.g. in paper and board machines’ stock preparation departments.

Today, there is no quick way to measure consistency of different fibre streams for calibration of consistency sensors. Usually the measurements are done manually, which takes time and the result may be influenced by how the measurement is done.

“The module is of interest to any mill with many consistency sensors to be calibrated regularly,” says Öjvind Sundvall, MD PulpEye. “As the consistency influences, among other things, the amount of chemicals added and the refining, it is very important that the consistency sensors always give the actual values. In stock preparation departments there are many flows where false or slow consistency measurements during calibrations may result in substantial costs caused by wrong product quality.”

first ConsistencyEye customers confirm that a calibration of the consistency in a flow takes only 2 to 5 minutes instead of earlier typically 40 to 60 minutes for the existing laboratory method. This easy and much faster way of calibrating contributes to a higher efficiency. In addition to that, the measurement result is independent of who does the calibration, which contributes to quality secured product properties.”

PulpEye introduces online measurement module PulpEye Vessel

Based on the patented technology to measure fibre wall thickness, PulpEye introduces PulpEye Vessel, a module to measure the quantity and size of vessel elements in hardwood pulps. The module uses circularized polarized light so that the images of fibres and vessel cells can be clearly distinguished from the background and hence easier to spot.

 

Vessel cells exist inKärlcell hardwood pulp. These cells are often relatively intact in the pulp process and can have a negative impact on pulp quality. They can reduce print quality by acting like flakes or not take ink the same way as the surrounding fibres. Dust problems can also occur due to vessel elements coming loose during printing.
“Measuring the quantity and size of vessel elements in pulp is of interest for pulp manufacturers in order to classify pulp,” says Öjvind Sundvall, MD PulpEye. “We have got very positive response from producers of hardwood pulps when discussing this new way of measuring vessel cells in a fibre suspension so the market for our technology is obviously there.”
“Our technology is also of interest for papermakers using pulps with big vessel cells or deinked pulp containing vessel cells from hardwood. Online measurement can early in the process detect variations and by acting on the results presented by PulpEye Vessel, costly rejections can be avoided.”
PulpEye mixes and circulates the sample through the flow cell where the camera captures images of the pulp. By using circularized polarized light, the images of fibres and vessel cells can be clearly distinguished from the background. With normal light, vessel cells are almost transparent and much more difficult to detect and capture in an image.

Images are captured at a very high resolution. The size of vessel cells are typically over 100 microns across and for some species, such as eucalyptus, the vessel cells are even bigger. The resulting images are analysed using a series of image processing steps.

 

 

 

 

 
“The analysis results, expressed as e.g. number of vessel cells per a certain amount of pulp, are presented as a separate report in PulpEye. Alarm limits beyond which actions must be taken can therefore be set. Needless to say, the accuracy of PulpEye Vessel compared with manual checking on sheets of pulp is far better and the unit delivers results in real time,” Öjvind Sundvall finishes.

The new turbidity sensor automatically gives the actual retention value.

The new dynamic drainage analyser, DDA 5, is receiving great interest. Imerys UK already has the model DDA 4 and has just bought a DDA 5 for their operations in the UK. The existing DDA 4 will be shipped to Imerys USA.

“It is really rewarding that Imerys UK has now bought their second dynamic drainage analyser,” says Öjvind Sundvall. “In 2013 they bought a DDA 4 and based on their good experiences of the equipment, and their need for higher capacity, they have now bought our new model DDA 5.”

PulpEye hoists the flag in Canada higher

CanadaDuring the fall PulpEye has received new orders for two PulpEye analyzers from two Canadian mills, Domtar Windsor, QC, and Port Hawkesbury Paper, NS.

Domtar Windsor in Quebec has two paper machines with a total production capacity of about 640,000 tonnes of uncoated papers like high brightness, opaques, offset, multi-purpose digital papers, copy paper, laser forms bond and envelope papers. The mill has one pulp line with a capacity of about 440,000 tonnes. The PulpEye for Domtar Windsor is up and running and equipped with modules measuring  fibre, shives and SR as well as with the CrillEye module.

Port Hawkesbury Paper in Nova Scotia is an integrated mechanical pulp and paper mill producing high gloss papers. The TMP pulp production is done by three refiner lines each having three stages of refining. The PulpEye being installed is configured with modules for measurements of freeness, fibre and shives. It is also the first mill in North America to install the RefinerEye module, a clever way of taking high concentration pulp samples directly from the blow line after refiners.

“Needless to say we are very pleased to have landed these orders in Canada,” says Öjvind Sundvall, MD PulpEye AB. “It is our second breakthrough in Canada and for new application areas. Without mentioning any details about these installations I can say that these customers are really showing innovative thinking and we look forward to a continued good cooperation.”

First DDA 5 delivery to the USA

The new turbidity sensor is great for measuring retention

The dynamic drainage analyser, DDA, simulates drainage conditions on paper machines and is sold to papermakers, chemical manufacturers and R&D companies worldwide. Earlier this year this equipment was upgraded to model DDA 5 with features like drainage speed, initial drainage and temperature readings presented for chosen time intervals. The productivity has increased as the equipment is automatically cleaned after each analysis.

The total number of DDA units sold is now close to one hundred, with the most recent one delivered to Nalco USA. The company has used a DDA equipment for a number of years and is now replacing the old one with the new DDA 5 model in order to make use of its new features and improved efficiency.
